Fishing reports starting to roll in

Fishing reports are starting to come in from area lakes as ice is off or about off on most bodies of water.

The reservoirs over by Helena are always a good bet this time of the year. Trout fishing has started to pick up and will only get better as spring type conditions make their way into Montana. Shore anglers are doing well using Power Bait.

Tom Jenner reports from Seeley Lake that the ice is coming off Salmon and Seeley lakes and there is some open water, though very few anglers have been out fishing the open water so far.

Jenner did say that he has had some good luck on the Clearwater River at the junction of Highway 83 and Highway 200. Jenner has been using in-line spinners and spoons with no one color better than the other. If you are bait fishing, Jenner recommends trying night crawlers or smelt.

Spring Mack Days on Flathead Lake is still underway with the anglers already entering 9,300 lake trout as of last Sunday. Flathead Lake is another great place to try your luck for lake trout and maybe do your 2009 maiden voyage for your boat at the same time.

Perch fishing is also starting to pick up on Flathead Lake. Some anglers are doing well in East Polson Bay, fishing from boats. The perch are still a little tough to find. The water temperature might need to warm a little bit more.

Boat anglers and shore anglers are also catching perch anchored near and fishing from the Polson Docks. The perch are a smaller there but if you give it some time you should be able to catch enough 9-11-inch perch to make a nice meal.
