If you are going to go fishing then June is the month to take some time and enjoy it on the water. Anglers who use all types of methods and test their skills in every body of water generally have better luck during this month than perhaps any other on the calendar. It’s true of rivers, lakes and reservoirs and species from trout to bass to walleyes. For river and stream anglers, this is the month when spring runoff recedes and waters begin to clear. It’s prime time for fishing.

One of the most famous Montana hatches also takes place for a couple of weeks in June and that is the salmonfly hatch on Rock Creek, 22 miles east of Missoula. Doug Persico, who owns Rock Creek Fisherman’s Mercantile, is happy to give fisherman daily updates either in person or by web site rcmerc.com or phone 825-6440.

Trout fishing on many lakes continues to be good especially in the higher elevation lakes like Georgetown Lake. Lake Mary Ronan can produce great catches of kokanee salmon and the lakes west of Kalispell are all very good to try this time of the year, including Bitterroot Lake for some nice kokanee. (Bill Brown Bob Wards 728-3220)

June is also a great walleye fishing month. Lakes that hold walleye around the state start to get some activity because the walleyes are on the bite. Nelson Reservoir east of Malta (Malta Marine 654-1442) is a good walleye lake and you will also have a good chance on catching a nice northern pike. Canyon Ferry Reservoir is probably one of the more popular lakes to catch a walleye where the fishing is easier on the south end with less snags. It is a lot of fun if you are on it when the bite is on.( Silos RV 266-3100).

Holter Lake continues its strong trout bite and the walleye bite picks up as the water warms.(Canyon Store in Wolf Creek 235-4111) Reports out of Lake Frances (One Stop Cenex 279-3600) always seem to be better in June for both northern pike and walleye.

Tiber Marina (759-7100) is open and the water level is lower than normal but call Nancy and she will give an up to the minute report on fishing on Tiber Dam.

And don’t forget about the big pond in eastern Montana. Fort Peck Reservoir. This 134 mile body of water is good fishing in just about every area, especially this year with the water level on the reservoir higher than last year. . Walleye, northern pike, lake trout and don’t forget smallmouth bass fishing. It might be a good idea to try and take a week and fish this lake. Marinas include Hell Creek (557-2345), 25 miles north of Jordan, Rock Creek Marina (485-2560) on the Dry Arm of the reservoir and of course Fort Peck Marina (Gene Moore at the Lakeridge, 526-3597) by the dam.

Remember when you travel east of the mountains to call ahead for updated information and also make sure you have your warm water fishing stamp when fishing waters that require it.
