Open Water Opportunites in the Helena Area Reservoirs Report

Anglers are reminded that ice conditions can be extremely variable on the reservoirs. Ice thickness can range from thick enough to support a vehicle to open water. Extreme caution should be used when accessing the ice.

Canyon Ferry: Rainbow trout fishing is fair from shore between Pond 4 and the north end of the Silos and from Snaggy to Hellgate Bay. Worms and/or marshmallows, along with standard spring-time fly fishing set-ups, are working best. No report for ling, yellow perch or walleye. Some ice can be found near the dam and mid-reservoir, but open water has been reported between Goose Bay and Cemetery Island and along the shore throughout the south end. Adam Strainer, FWP, Helena

Hauser: Rainbow fishing is fair in open water areas at the Causeway Bridge, Devil’s Elbow and York Bridge while using worms or egg sacks. Walleye fishing is good around York Bridge from both shore and boat. There is still ice at Black Sandy and in the Causeway Arm, however; anglers should not attempt to go out on it as it is too unstable. Troy Humphrey, FWP, Helena

Holter: Good rainbow fishing can be found from both shore and boat. Boat anglers are doing well on cowbells and a worm. Shore anglers are doing well around Holter Lake Ramp, Log Gulch and Black Beach while using worms or marshmallows. Walleye are being caught around Split Rock on jigs and worms. Ice is primarily gone from Holter. Troy Humphrey, FWP, Helena

Helena Valley Regulating Reservoir: No Report – ice is too unstable to access. Troy Humphrey, FWP, Helena

Summer creel report will resume in April. Thanks,
