The BITTERROOT RIVER fished great yesterday! We caught fish all day on dry flies and it is only going to get better. We hit the river about 10:00 a.m. We saw no rising fish to cast to, but we did work the seams and tail outs. All of the fish we caught were taken on a bigger Skwala pattern. The BLACKFOOT RIVER is not a good option now. This river is on the rise and should be that way for some time. Click the link to see current water flows.

The CLARK FORK RIVER East of Missoula could be productive, but still remains slow for this time of the year. It is an option for this weekend if you do not want to see lots of anglers. Same as last week. You should try Streamers but move them slow. You could be surprised with a huge fish, but not a lot of numbers. Dry flies that you should try to use are Skwalas, Betis, maybe March Browns and Capnia.  Click the link below to see up-to-date water flows.

MISSOURI If you do not want to hit the Bitterroot this weekend because of the crowds, then the MO is the next best choice. Wind is always something to watch out for on the Missouri, but it is a great river to fish this time of the year. Try pink scuds, price nymph, lighting bugs, rainbow warriors…the list goes on. Midge activity has bee great. This river is always stable and is a great river to fly fish. Stop in Headhunters fly shop and ask what the hot fly is. Or just give them a call. The YELLOWSTONE RIVER is starting to shape up. Sun and warmer temps will get the bugs moving, which will in turn make the fish more active. Use caution always, check the wind report before you float the Yellowstone this time of the year. Try streamers for big fish. The Yellowstone is a bit off color now and is in pre-runoff. This makes it productive for big fish due to the fact the visibility is down and the fish key into the movement of the streamer in the water rather than the color. Try every type of movement you can. Fast slow or dead drifting the streamer could produce a huge brown. Click on the link to view current water flows.

GALLATIN RIVER Montana Fishing Company Fly Fishing guide Zac Sexton has been on the Gallatin every day this week. He is catching fish with patterns he tied up and the four piece prototype bamboo rod he designed for Sweet Grass Rods. He is catching the trout on nymphs late in the afternoon. The MADISON RIVER is on the rise. It will not be long before this river hits run off stage. I would pass on the Madison now. Maybe in a week the river will come back into shape, but donʼt count on it. If you are in the Bozeman Area, this weekend, and want to fish the famous river then try a crayfish pattern. You need something big and colorful for the fish to see. Streamers choice should include Home Invaders, yellow or black, Sex Dungeons, black, orange or yellow, or zonkers tan or golden, the list goes on… San Juan worms of any color, tan or black rubber legs size 4 to 6. NOXON It is just about Pike time. We need some sunny days with warm weather to make the vegetation grow a bit and get the pike into the shallow waters. When it does happen it will be sooooo…. much fun to catch large pike on the fly! This stretch of the Clark Fork River is damed and produces some of the largest pike in Montana!
