Montana Outdoor Weekly Wrap Up 3/25/2012

This past week was busy for me. With the open water fishing starting to pick up and the ice fishing winding down fast, (Check out the latest post by Jay Hansen from Montana Sporting Journal “Last ice fishing trip”) I spent most of my week trying to get my boat ready to hit the water. As boat anglers, all across Montana know, the first trip to the open water can be an adventure. No matter how much you think that you are prepared. It always amazes me how things on my boat, that worked fine during my last fishing trip last fall, don’t seem to work when I take my first fishing trip in the spring.

What prompted my motivation to get things put together was the ice is melted off Holter Reservoir and Fort Peck Reservoir. It didn’t hurt that anglers have already entered nearly 4,000 lake trout in Spring Mack Days on Flathead Lake through last Friday either. Check out the Mo Fisch and Zimmer Tackle post to learn how they are catching all these lake trout either Jigging or trolling.

Mary Beth Kibler mentioned on her weekly report this week that there might be a ban on using live bait on the Missouri River this year effective June 1st. You can listen to her report to try and find out more about this on this week’s audio reports right here on MontanaOutdoor.com

Steelhead fishing on the North Fork in Orofino, Idaho was good this week for Jim Johnson from Hi Country Snack Foods and friends. Johnson went fishing, this past Wednesday through Friday, and his fishing party caught and released quite a few steelhead. Look for the video from the Karl Tyler Chevrolet Fishing Video Gallery from the trip that Jim and I took a couple of weeks ago steelhead fishing, I think you will enjoy it.

Speaking of videos check out the Goliath Grouper that Brandt Hamernick caught fishing in Florida this past February off of Fort Meyers on the Florida coast. It weighed 220 pounds and he caught it on his Birthday!

Also congratulations to Ed Livington from Fort Benton and Jordan Hofer from Galata the latest winners on the Kendall Four Seasons Subaru statewide trivia that we do twice every Saturday morning on the Montana Outdoor Radio Show. Have a Great Week!
