Professional Angler Pat Slater’s Tip of the Week: Jigging for Lake Trout

Finally, I got to hear my Yamaha wake up from its’ long winter nap and what a spectacular day!  A good friend and I spent the afternoon on the water and it couldn’t have been better!

Like several deep cold lakes talked about on Montana Outdoor Radio, Buffalo Bill Reservoir outside of Cody is full of Lake Trout and the bite is ON!   The parking lot at the launch ramp was full when we arrived after lunch.  Most of the boats concentrated on the west end of the reservoir but some were working the South Fork arm too.  As we were getting ready to head out, others were limited out and on their way home!

Our plan was simple, locate some the fish with sonar and sit on them vertical jigging.  The depth we targeted was 60 to 40 as we moved across the lake, finally marking a ton of fish in the 45-40 foot range.  I used a medium action spinning rod with a 2500 series reel and a hi-vis braided line.  A little heavy for the average 20 inch laker; but our hope is always for that 20 plus pound monster! We didn’t score one of those today but no matter, we smiled all afternoon!

For Buffalo Bill, there’s just one more week of action before the west end of the reservoir is closed to fishing to protect the other trout staging for the run up the North Fork for spawn.  The scenery is spectacular as is all our fishing spots in this part of the country!

As always…. Be Smart and Be Safe!
