Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks assisted the state Department of Justice as it sampled rainbow trout and shorthead redhorse suckers in the Yellowstone River below Laurel for signs of oil contamination on Wednesday. The work is part of a follow-up to last year’s ExxonMobil oil spill, which dumped about 63,000 gallons of crude oil into the Yellowstone River in July. Tissue samples were taken from some of the fish to be processed at labs for signs of hydrocarbons. Based on the findings, the state will decide whether to do a more intensive assessment of the effect of the oil spill on the fishery.
