Still Good River Fishing in the John Perry Fishing Report
By Matt Schauer

The Bitterroot and Rock Creek are still the best bet for river fishing around the Missoula area. These waters are gradually dropping and the water is clearing. March brown activity is great on Rock Creek from about 2 to 5. You have to pick the right run or riffles-when you find them you will have lots of fun trying to catch rising fish. I would suggest using and switching different March brown patterns. Use cripples, parachutes, split wings, and spinners.

You may also see the occasional Skwala stone fly wiggling in the water. This year so far-a size 10 pattern has worked best for us. Remember if you are floating the Bitterroot river-make sure you know the section of water you are going on – this river changes from year to year and is by far the most dangerous river in Western Montana. I know of 3 drift boats that have already been wrapped up in log jams.
