This season, anglers will be dealing with the benefits, and downsides, of last year’s high water. Some of the details of what happened can be found in the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks’ 2012 annual Fishing Newsletter, which came out this week and should be posted online sometime this week. In a nutshell, many fish were swept downstream out of big, popular reservoirs like Canyon Ferry and Fort Peck. That should benefit some downstream fisheries. On the downside, the cold weather and high water hampered egg collection for spawning programs like Fort Peck’s where walleye and Chinook salmon eggs are gathered.
