Fair Fishing in the Helena Reservoirs Report

Canyon Ferry:  Rainbow trout continue to cruise the shorelines and fishing is fair to good across the reservoir.  Shoreline anglers are doing well at traditional locations on the north end of the reservoir using worms or various bead head nymph patterns.  Boat anglers are having success trolling crankbaits (various colors) and cowbells.  Walleye fishing has been very good.  Nearly all of the action is on the south end from Duck Creek to the waterfowl ponds.  Trolling worm harnesses, tipped with worms or leeches, in 5 to 15 feet of water, has worked best.  Look for the walleye bite to get better over the next couple months. No report for yellow perch or ling.  Also, due to spring runoff, be cautious of large woody debris throughout the reservoir.

Hauser:  Rainbow fishing is fair around Lakeside, Devil’s Elbow and York Bridge while trolling crankbaits or cowbells.  A few rainbows are being caught from shore below Canyon Ferry Dam and at the Causeway Bridge while using worms or Powerbait.  Walleye fishing is really slow in both Lake Helena and Hauser. Holter:  Rainbow fishing was slow over the weekend.  A few rainbows are being caught from shore at Log Gulch and Gates of the Mountains on egg sacks and flies.  Walleye fishing is slow.  Troy Humphrey, FWP, Helena
