Professional Angler Pat Slater’s Tip of the Week: Learn Something Everytime You are on the Water

Hello Everyone,

I had this great vision of writing of about a “Feast” this week and that we were at the right spot at the right time.  The spot was Boysen Reservoir just south of Thermopolis Wyoming.  A great fishery with an outstanding walleye population, a place well known and popular with many Montanans.  The time was Sunday, the storm was over and conditions predicted to be ideal…(read that as sunshine and no WIND).

As we passed through Thermop., the temperature gauge on the truck read 30 degress; but there was blue sky and the sun was starting to melt the frost on the grass.  Expectations were high as we drove through the Wind River canyon.  We cleared the tunnels and climb the hill to veiw the reservoir for the first time this season.

We had a great time, the conditions were phenomenal, but the bite was tough for us.  We did see an occational fish caught however the few boats on the water seemed to be moving around a lot.  We missed a couple bites and had to eat humble pie once again.

The trip was worth the expense and effort as I learn something everytime I’m on the water.  I always enjoy nature, we got to watch some beautiful  loons fishing and grebes beginning their mating rituals.  Tried some different spots…getting GPS coordances for future references and worked on my rusty casting skills.  Always great to be on the water.

I spent some time the day before tieing crawler harnesses and something I do to deal with line twist is to use bead chain swivels opposite the business end.  I use a Palomar knot to tie most everything as it quick, easy and very, very strong.

Til next time….Be Smart and Be Safe!
