We were out on the Thompson River all this week. The salmon flies are out, but not in the number you would expect on the river. The water temp is holding at 48 to 50. With warmer weather on the way, the hatch may improve. Only time will tell. Dry fly fishing is great on the Thompson. Lots of PMDʼs Yellow Sallies and some Salmon Flies…. Basically you can put a dry on the water and get a fish in a mater of minutes. Do not rule out the salmon fly dry because the fish are keying into it!!

The Bitterroot River is located in Missoula, Montana is starting to fish very well. The west fork is on fire. Warmer weather will just improve the hatch. Yellow Sallies, PMD, Salmon Flies, Golden Stone Flies ect…. If you are looking for a great dry fly fishery, then this should be your choice this weekend. I always suggest getting an outfitter/guide for this river. Lots of log jams and the river changes constantly. Be safe out there!

The Blackfoot River is located East of Missoula, Montana and is starting to shape up. The river is coming into shape with great streamer action. Soon the salmon flies will start coming off. If you are looking for flies to tie then think spruce moth. This hatch is not far off. You should have a bunch of these on hand to trick the native trout.

The run off is not over yet, but there is still great fly fishing to be had across Western Montana this weekend. So get out and wet a line! Be sure to check out the Montana Water Data Page and get all the current water flows before you head out on the river.

If you are interested in a guided fly fishing trip please contact us. Summer is coming on fast, so plan your trip with Montana Fishing Company now to secure your spot on the river.
