All the folks in Thompson Falls, Montana have been waiting on the elusive salmon fly to show itʼs self. We simply need warmer weather. The water temperature is sitting around 45 to 47 degrees. Even though only a few salmon flies have been spotted, the Thompson River is great now for dry fly fishing. I have seen plenty of the salmon flies in the nymph stage.

I have caught a few trout on the salmon fly pattern, but most of the fish are rising to size 12 to 14 caddis, cripples, and stimulator patterns. The dry fly fishing has been so good, I have only fished a single dry fly with no dropper. I have been fishing the upper stretch of the river from mile marker 17 to 27.

The water clarity is great and is only getting better. The water flows are perfect for this time of year steady at 958 cfs or four feet. One word of caution, use good sound judgment when wading this river. The Thompson River is vary fast even at 958 cfs. You do not want to find yourself falling in this river because there are many log jams and obstructions. Typically the fish are hanging around the bank, so you do not have to wade too much. A simple roll cast will allow you to get your fly in perfect position on the other side of the river.
