Bitterroot Fishing Well in the Montana Fly Fishing Company Fishing Report
By Scott Anderson

This week, I was out guiding on all of the Missoula area rivers. The Bitterroot River, south of Missoula, Montana was the best of the three. The upper river is in shape and everyone knows it. I saw lots of other guides and people out having fun and fishing. My client was an excellent caster and could mend very well. It was a joy to guide him. He could really catch the fish.

We boated over 40 fish along with some 20 inch trout. The trout were feeding on top and were taking the fly very hard. Cripples, Green Drakes, PMDʼs, Yellow Sallies, and Golden Stones were the dry flies of choice. Forget the nymphs on this river for the next few months! It is time to Dry Fly fish in Montana! After the weeks of fluctuating water the river finally started to drop. Get out on the Bitterroot ASAP! Any stretch will work. REMEMBER TO GET A GUIDE IF YOU ARE NOT AN EXPERIENCED ROWER BECAUSE THIS RIVER IS DANGEROUS. Montana Fishing Company offers guided fly fishing trips on the Bitterroot River.

Bald Eagle

The Blackfoot was hit and miss. I spoke with a lot of Missoula guides over the past week. They reported that the river would produce numbers, but only if your client could cast and leave the nymphs in the water. There are some very big fish to be taken on the Blackfoot. Most of the salmon flies are gone. yellow sallies, PMDʼs, Caddis, Streamers, Green Drakes, Golden Stones, ect…. will all work well.

The lower Clark Fork is not that good now, but should come into shape in the next week. Lots of bugs on the water for the fish to feed on. I have not been out on the upper Clark Fork this week. Other rivers are fishing so well I did not have the time.

Montana Fishing Company offers the best guided fishing trips in the state. We guide on the waters in Missoula, Bozeman, and the Missouri river.
