Great Dry Fly Fishing Opportunities in the Bozeman Area Fishing Report: 7/10/2012

The Bozeman area continues to see great dry fly fishing on all rivers. Wade fishing opportunities are improving as are rivers continue to drop. This is a great time to be fishing in the Greater Bozeman area.

The Gallatin River: The Gallatin is really coming together in the past few days. The river continues to drop and hatches continue to take off. The river is still a bit high so be careful when wading.  Salmon flies are about done and are now all the way up the river and into the park area. However, other hatches are starting to take off. Smaller golden stones, yellow sallies, PMDs, and caddis have been all over the river. I have been having some great fishing on larger attractor patterns like stimulators and chubby chernobyls.

Lower Madison: After being closed due to fires the lower is back in action. However, fishing is a bit tough. Warmer water and lots of tubers make things difficult on a fisherman. If you want to hit the lower get there early in the morning or later in the evening. Look for PMD’s in the morning and Caddis in the evening.

Upper Madison: The Upper is still producing some great dry fly fishing. PMD’s and Caddis are really starting to take off up there. The salmonfly action is nearing its end but they are still out up there and the fish are still looking for the big bugs. As with most rivers across the state, PMD’s in the morning and great Caddis hatches way into the evening are providing great fishing opportunities.

Yellowstone: The Yellowstone has really come together in the past week and is the place to be. Large attractors like a chubby with a long dropper will put fish in the boat. Yellow sallies, PMD’s, and caddis have all really taken off as the flows continue to drop. Running deep nymph rigs with a rubber leg trailed by a smaller beadhead working the deeper banks and seams of the river will really put fish in the boat as well.
