North Fork of Shoshone Opens July 15th: Pat Slater Fishing Report

Hello Everyone,

I was on the water Sunday testing some rigs I tied to use on Fort Peck.  I still some work to do, but if my ideas pan out, I’ll let you all know.

We spent about 6 hours on Buffalo Bill Reservoir, just west of Cody, actually targeting walleyes and had a little success. Walleyes in Buffalo Bill???? There are a few that were illegally introduce some time ago.  The trout fishermen were shocked when walleyes came to their nets a few years back. The largest documented to date, by the Wyoming Fish and Game, is a 13 pounder. It seems most of them are still being caught by those trolling for trout. A few serious walleye anglers are going after them, but most aren’t talking….

The reservoir is still a world class trout fishery and populations are healthy. Special regulations are in place to protect the trout, especially the cutthroat. With the natural spawn that takes place every year on the North Fork of the Shoshone, it should remain that way. Those regulations have had the west end of the North Fork arm closed since April 1st and the much anticipated summer opening is this coming Sunday, July 15th.

I expect the parking lot to be jammed with trucks and boat trailers.

Some things to note if you plan to come down for the opener or at later date.

First off, Wyoming Fish & Game, like Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, is working very hard to protect its’ waters from AIS so make sure to DRAIN (including lower units) CLEAN and DRY your boat. An inspection station is set up at the west end of Cody and all water craft headed up the North or South Fork roads MUST stop.

Secondly, the lake is full which is good for water storage but bad for boating because every piece of driftwood that was on the shore is now floating in the lake and LARGE rafts of debris are present and pushed around by the wind so their location is ever changing.

Last, but not least, KNOW the regulations on harvest limits as they are in place to protect the native trout populations.

If you see me out there, come by and say “Hi.”

Til next time….Be Smart and Be Safe!
