Here is a short preview for the Montana Outdoor Radio Show, from Brett French, Outdoor Editor for the Billings Gazette:

Last weekend while backpacking in the Beartooth Mountains it was re-emphasized to me that folks venturing into the woods need a few key skills before traveling. I saw two groups, back to back, that were unsure of their location despite maps. Navigation skills, obviously, are key. Thinking about their temporary disorientation, I came up with a few other key skills I think people should know before they go.

Those skills include:

  • how to build a fire and leave no trace of it
  • how to purify their water to avoid Giardia, a parasite that can cause dehydration and diarrhea
  • how to go to the bathroom without leaving a wad of toilet paper sticking out from under a large rock

There are several other skills, some of which fill entire books, that folks should consider learning before they hike, hunt or go backpacking. The best way to learn most of the skill are from a mentor. But when that’s not an option, check out the local library or scan websites for details.
