Fall is Here and the Fish are More Active: Scott Anderson Fishing Report

Fall is here and the rivers are showing the signs. With the days getting shorter and the air and water temperatures getting lower the fish are getting more active. Missoula is not the place to be this week. Smoke has been hazordous for everyone. Montana Fishing Company has been redirecting our guided fly fishing trips to other areas of Montana. Fly fishing in the Missoula area is still great, but I want the clients to have a safe enjoyable fly fishing experience.

The lower Clark Fork River east of Missoula along I-90 all the way to Paradise, Montana is fishing well. The fish are rising to Hecuba’s and Trico’s. You can still put caddis and hoppers on the water and they will take a few fish. Try nymphing when the rise slows down. I would suggest a long float for the day and push through some of the more unproductive water. It is a bit of a drive, but you can always stay the night at Quinn’s Hot Springs. If you find yourself down that way give us a call.

The Bozeman area is also starting to get better with streamers on the Yellowstone River and the Madison River. Montana Fishing company Guide Stephen Smith reports,” The fish are starting to eat streamers in the troughs along with smaller nymphs. Try olive, white, and yellow articulated streamers for the bigger brown trout. The Yellowstone is doing well with attractor patterns up high. Hoppers are still working under the right conditions. Try you favorite bead head dropper about 24 to 36 inches under the dry.On to the Mighty Missouri River located in Craig, Montana. Callibatis have been popping up. Nymphing is still good on the MO. You can try the center of the river if the edge is not giving you what you desire, This River has great fish numbers and they are everywhere. When I take a client to the MO for the first time they are amazed by the amount of fish they see and how big they are. The best thing about the mo now is there is no smoke!!!
