Great Walleye Fishing On Canyon Ferry: Helena Area Outdoor Report

Hi, it’s Angie from Bob Ward & Sons, & while the weather decides if it is SUMMER or FALL, it looks like the BEST fishin in the HELENA area might just be subsurface these days…

Walleye fishin is GREAT at CANYON FERRY, as usually happens in late Sept, so get those deep-diving crankbaits in the water! Try your weighted line rigs as well…both HAUSER & HOLTER have been good for trout action, & you may want to unleash some of your big meat here, like Black Woolies, White or Yellow Sex Dungeons, Copper Zonkers & what-have-you…sizes 0-2 have been what WE’RE using at the Lakes! You spin guys are good with your favorite Spoon or a Swedish Pimple with a GloHook & Maggot. The weather’s gorgeous, & as long as the smoke isn’t too thick, a day on the Lakes is just what you SHOULD do this weekend!

Try some Nymphs in Purples or Pinks on the MISSOURI River…we’d advise Soft Hackles, Pink Ray Charles, or Rust San Juans, OR you can go to a PMD Emerger like the Short Wing in szs 14-18….terrestrials are pretty much a done thing, & it’s about time to feed the monsters with a Whitefish Streamer pattern, or a Gold Bling Minnow in a 1-2. If you just HAVE TO test some dries, we’ve heard of some success with a Caddis Pupa or Mayfly patterns…some trout are still rising, but most reports say the Nymphing has been SIZZLIN, & well worth the effort until the fall hatches kick in when it finally gets cold.

The HELENA BOB WARDS is another place to keep your cool when the last bit of summer wants to warm you up too much! We have all you need to get your Fall Fishin underway…including waders & wade shoes, a super Nymph fly selection, lots of waterproof & water-resistant clothing and jacket options, & other needed supplies as well! We won’t let you down when it comes to gearing you up! We’ll see you where the fish are! More next week, friends!
