Late Summer Fishing Exceptional on Big Horn: Professional Angler Pat Slater

Hello to One and All!

What a GREAT day on the water! Late summer, hot temperatures and hot fishing! Big Horn Canyon National Recreation Area (a.k.a. Big Horn Lake or Yellowtail Reservoir) is my favorite place this time of year.

Water temperature varied from about 62 degrees, near Horseshoe Bend, to just over 70 degrees down the lake. The lake hasn’t turned over yet and with consistant warm weather forecasted, it’s anybody’s guess when that will occur. Until then, late summer fishing should be exceptional and with many folks switching gears to hunting, there is lots of open water!

I saw a few boats, spoke with some fishermen and success varied as much as the different techniques being tried. My success came from a favorite, bottom bouncing with Smile Blades and the Cha Cha Squidder. It was a little slow for a while, picking up the first fish after a couple of hours, but what a fish! A 20 inch sauger that weighed 3 pounds even on my digital scale. I decided to move, looking to find more active fish and I was rewarded for my decision. I ended the afternoon with four fish over 20 inches and one just over 18!

It’s a awesome time to be on the water!

Til next time….Be Smart and Be Safe!
