HARVEST SLOW DURING THIRD WEEKEND IN SOUTHWEST MONTANA; WEATHER CHANGE WILL LIKELY IMPROVE SUCCESS RATES

BOZEMAN—Over 1,200 hunters passed through Fish, Wildlife and Parks game check stations over the weekend with 4% harvesting an animal. Silver City saw the most hunter activity with 539 hunters.

The highest number of elk taken was in the Madison (by Cameron check station numbers).  The highest number of deer was harvested in the northern part of the region.

Region 3 Wildlife Manager Howard Burt says this low harvest overall is by and large weather related.

The weekend’s mild temperatures and lack of snow mean elk especially are up high and difficult to track.

With weather predicted to change drastically by the upcoming weekend, Burt says the harvest trend will almost certainly turn in a positive direction in the coming weeks.
