Last Wednesday, a portion of the fight against wolf hunting in the Northern Rockies was dismissed.
In 2010, federal District Court Judge Donald Molloy ruled wolves were illegally removed from the Endangered Species Act protection in Montana and Idaho.
The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals vacated the ruling and decided environmental groups cannot refer to Molloy’s initial ruling as precedent. So, wolves in Montana and Idaho remain under state management.
Montana hunters have harvested 56 wolves across the state. Region 310 (west of Yellowstone and south of Bozeman) is the WMU with the highest harvest number, 8 wolves.
To report the harvest of a wolf, please call the Harvest Reporting line at 1-877-FWP-WILD (1-877-397-9453). Obtain current harvest info by calling 1-800-385-7826.
