Freezeout Lake is located west of Great Falls, near Choteau, and consists of upwards of 11,000 acres.

This particular lake is Montana’s primary Snow Goose staging area, where upwards of 120,000 Snow Geese and Tundra Swans gather before moving on for the winter.  After traveling over 1,000 miles from California, the Snow Geese typically reach Freezeout Lake around March, although there are year-round wildlife viewing opportunities.

There are also several hunting opportunities at Freezeout Lake, as the general public, with the appropriate license, can hunt waterfowl and upland game birds, but Tundra Swan hunting is allowed by permit only.   Muskrat trapping is also available for successful applicants.
