Winter is only beginning, but it’s time to start planning your summer. Are you interested in floating the Smith River in 2013? Montana State Parks announced yesterday that permit applications will be available on Wednesday, January 2, 2013.

Permits for the 59-mile scenic float from Camp Baker to Eden Bridge are issued annually through a lottery. Last year, FWP received 6,158 applications and 1,061 permits were distributed.

“Montanans know that the Smith River is a premier recreation destination, and last year we saw a record number of applicants,” said Chas Van Genderen, Administrator of Montana State Parks. “We look forward to our upcoming season and to providing a fun and safe experience.”

All applications must be submitted online or postmarked by February 15, 2013. Applicants pay a $10.00 non-refundable permit application fee. Float fees are not included in the application fee.

Here is how you can apply:

The lottery results will be available online on Tuesday, February 26, 2013. And Successful applicants will be notified through the mail.

And don’t forget to apply for the Smith River Super Permit by March 15, 2013. Only one person is selected to receive the super permit, on March 19. The winner can choose any date to launch. It is $5.00 per chance, and you can buy a unlimited number of chances. Revenue from the sale of super permits will be used to protect and improve the Smith River.
