Book and Brew, or How About a Bill? – Brett French Radio Show Preview

On a cold winter’s day, it’s sometimes nice to hunker down with a book next to the fire while sipping a hot toddy. With that in mind, I’ve got a couple of recommendations for winter reading material as well as drink selections.

Topping my list is Jack Atcheson Sr.’s new book “Real Hunting & Campfire Humor, Short Stories from a Lifetime of Travel and Adventure.” Atcheson is Butte born and bred, and over the course of his 80-some years, he’s hunted across Montana, Canada, Alaska and Africa. His stories are sometimes too unreal to believe, but that’s the way most good hunting tales are.

In case you didn’t know, the true definition of a hot toddy is to mix Scotch whisky with hot water, honey or sugar and a slice of lemon. Some people add hot milk instead of hot water. A toddy used to be prepared by doctors as a tonic for a variety of ailments. Make it strong enough, and you’re likely to forget all kinds of things, including what ails you.

On Sunday, I have a story about House Bill 607, which was passed by the last Legislature, and how that bill has affected funding for several Fish, Wildlife and Parks programs. The Legislature reconvenes on Monday in Helena. There are a host of other bills that could come up that deal with fish, wildlife and hunting issues that Montanans may want to keep track of. Right now, few bills have been drafted, but of those that have been drawn up are ones that would allow the use of lighted nocks on arrows, trapping of mountain lions and hunting with silencers.
