Hi, Angie from Bob Ward & Sons here, with where to fish in HELENA :

The local weather has warmed up considerably lately, so use extreme caution if you’re on the ice!  You got solid Kokanee salmon fishing in mind?  The HELENA HOLDING RESERVOIR is great for whoever gets out there EARLY, as the later arrivals just aren’t capitalizing as well!  Use jigs with a Maggot or White Corn Tip, or Swedish Pimples.  Go about 25-35 ft for best success.  CANYON FERRY has been decent on the South End by the Silos, & early morns & late evenings have been best for Walleye.  Smelt or other Baitfish have been the key for the Walleye!  Ling have been best at Black Sandy, as we reported last week!   At the CAUSEWAY, a lot of open water is now available so again, be careful if you are out this way!

Use your Leech Patterns with some Flash on the MISSOURI, & strip slowly!  Nymphing hasn’t been as hot as Streamer fishing, so change up your tactics to the Big Meat!  There have been a few rising fish, but that activity is still very sporadic.  If you want to use some smaller flies, perhaps Midge Patterns or Larvae, in the 18-20 size range, go for it.  No reason not to get into practice with Dries for the upcoming Spring!

GREAT DIVIDE hosts the Montana Snow Rodeo this Saturday, so come on up for some thrills & fancy ski tricks!  The weather looks great for it, & the hill is sporting a 35-40″ base! SHOWDOWN has a 47-57″ base & plenty of great snow for the weekend, so is still an excellent choice for the weekend. We’ll see you there!

The Bob Wards Progressive Sale, Week 4, has the BEST prices yet on all the great items you still need to get you outdoors, either for winter sporting or for the upcoming spring season! When YOU’RE in the store, grab your newly-released 2013 Fishing Regs and read up!  We’ll tell you more next week, friends!
