I had the opportunity to get out on the Kootenai River this week. Although we did not get any huge trout we did hook up on a few. The Kootenai is known best for its state record rainbow trout at 38.6 inches long and 33 pounds caught in 1997. We did have a good day and sometimes it is the little ones that make the memories for us.

Along the way I was able to take a look at the Bull River just outside of Noxon, Montana. This river is located in a valley and has undercut grassy banks where brown trout love to hang out. You can only float the bull during runoff, and is not recommended unless you have a guide that knows the water. It flows into Clark Fork River just below Noxon, Montana.

Noxon Reservoir is starting to show signs of the northern pike spawn. The water temp is on the rise with other rivers dumping into it. Montana’s weather is going to shape up next week with temps reaching 70 degrees. I also had the opportunity to get out on the Vermillion River in Trout Creek, Montana. It was still a bit cold to see much action, so Cora and I took a quick lunch break.

River flows across Montana are as follows:

  • Clark Fork Missoula 4620 cfs , Plaines, MT 22,300 cfs
  • Bitterroot River Darby 577 cfs
  • Blackfoot River Missoula 1490 cfs
  • Missouri River Wolf Creek, MT Dam 4140 cfs
  • Yellowstone River Livingston, Mt 1440 cfs
  • Madison River McAllister, MT 1310 cfs

Next week you will see the rivers rise once again with the snow melt. Be safe out on the water this spring.
