I’ve been to Yellowstone National Park and West Yellowstone numerous times, but it wasn’t until last weekend that I took the time to stop in at the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center in West Yellowstone. I’d always put off going in thinking I didn’t really care to see caged grizzly bears or wolves. But I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised at how fun it was to watch two of the nine bears.

One, known as “The Destroyer” for his ability to open closed containers, lifted a lodgepole pine tree out of a stand after trying to push it over. And the wolves in one of the two exhibits came over to stand close to the window of the Naturalist Center cabin as if they were trained to pose for photos.

The center also has a great interpretive exhibit on bears that includes mounted grizzly and black bears as well as skeletons, skulls and a bear trap. The center is open every day at 8:30 a.m. Closing hours vary by the season. The cost of entry is $10.50 for adults and the tickets are good for two consecutive days. I’m sorry I put off a visit for so long, and I look forward to going back again.
