This Sunday is Mothers Day! Spending a day with your mom on a river or lake this weekend just might be a fun thing to do. It is the time of the year that fishing all across the state really starts to get hot. The water temperatures on the lakes starts to warm and the fish become more active. The warmer daytime temperatures will get the spring run-off from the mountain snow pack moving into the rivers, so using streamer and fishing the back water s on the rising rivers might be the method and areas you will want to try fishing.

If you want to take mom fishing to an area lake and reservoirs you will have plenty of choices and opportunity. Lake Como might be a good bet, as you and mom would have fun fishing from shore. Anglers have been having success catching small trout by the boat ramp using power bait fishing from shore. Browns Lake trout fishing is hot. Boat anglers have been doing very well trolling a clown colored needle fish or a leach patterned fly. Flathead Lake continues to produce really good fishing for lake trout this time of the year. Boat anglers are either jigging or trolling for the lakers. Spring Mack Days is winding down and once again they have had some great fishing during the contest with over 21,000 lake trout entered so far.

I have had a good time fishing and catching trout over on Holter Reservoir. In fact all the lakes over in the Helena area are fishing well for rainbow trout. Troy Humphrey from Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks had this fishing report. “Canyon Ferry: Rainbow trout are cruising shorelines throughout the reservoir, especially on the north end. Shoreline anglers are doing well at most access points using worms and/or marshmallows, spoons or various bead head nymph patterns. Boat anglers have had some success tolling cowbells tipped with worms or crank baits in 5 to 25 feet of water. Hauser: Some rainbows are being caught at the Causeway Bridge and Riverside from shore while using egg sacks, marshmallows or worms. Boat anglers are finding rainbows while trolling cowbells in the Causeway Arm and around Riverside. Holter: Good rainbow fishing can be found while trolling cowbells tipped with a worm throughout the reservoir. Shore action is fair around Departure Point and Log Gulch while using marshmallows, worms or lime and orange Power bait.

The only good report on walleye fishing on any of the reservoirs over by Helena came from the Lake Helena, “Lake Helena walleye fishing is good with the best results occurring while trolling dark colored crank baits or using bottom bouncers with a worm according to Humphrey.

How bout cooking mom some fish for dinner?. If you catch some trout I have a great recipe that is quick and simple. Take your trout filet and put it in a pan over some melted butter. Fry the filet for 4-5 minutes and then flip it over. Spread fresh parmesan cheese over the filet and cook till the cheese has melted. Serve with potatoes or coldslaw and of course with a lot of love.

Happy Mother’s Day!
