Newly-Tagged Elk Calf Released to Nearby Mother – Caught on Video

With cow elk calving happening around Montana, we hope to see more calves in elk herds than in recent years.  (Click HERE to see some fantastic pictures and a video of  a cow helping her calf stand within minutes of being born.)

To help determine the cause of the decline of the elk calf survival rate in parts of the Bitterroot, a study was started in 2011 by FWP and is on its final month.  The video below, filmed by FWP biologist Jay Kolbe, shows Quentin Kujala, releasing a newly-tagged calf back to its mom, that is waiting for her little one no more than 50 yards away…
