Sean Jansen recently celebrated his 25th birthday by making an unusual trip into Yellowstone National Park. The recent Bozeman arrival decided to take his ocean-going stand-up paddleboard on an excursion from Lewis Lake to Shoshone Lake, about a 6 mile trip that goes up the channel that connects the two bodies of water.

Normally, SUPs, as the boards are called, are relegated to surfing or more recently have been adapted to making day trips down rivers or for playing around on lakes. But Jansen decided to load his down with camping gear and try it as an expedition vehicle. This may become more common as the popularity of the crafts continue to grow.

Jansen packed light, like a backpacker would, but also had the added convenience of being able to fish from the craft after he had set up camp.

Shoshone Lake is the second largest body of water in Yellowstone, measuring almost 7 miles long and more than 200 feet deep. It has been stocked with brown and lake trout and includes brookies that have invaded, as well. Jansen had success tossing streamers from the SUP.
