skiing3What do you call the air space between the snow and the ground? It’s the subnivian space. That’s one of the things I learned while visiting the Bohart Ranch Cross Country Ski Area, located about 16 miles northeast of Bozeman, last week. The ranch has a great winter program for area schoolchildren that blends Nordic skiing with lessons about the winter environment – what better way to get some exercise and gain some first-hand knowledge?

As the small groups of students navigated portions of the ranch’s 30 kilometers of trails, instructors would stop along the way and talk about predators, prey and winter survival. The program has been in existence at the ranch for about 12 years and may be the only one of its kind in the nation. I wish every school had a program like this.

Of course, you don’t have to be a student to ski on the well-groomed trails at Bohart, you don’t even have to have cross country skis. You can rent them there and even sign up for group or private lessons. It’s a beautiful spot at the base of the Bridger Mountains, well worth a visit. http://billingsgazette.com/lifestyles/recreation/
