This week has bee particularly balmy around Montana, which has caused some thin ice around the state. But people have been getting out and fishing regardless. Here are this week’s fishing summaries:

Chancy from Snappy’s
Chancy at Snappy’s says area ice is holding up nicely and Lake Mary Ronan has a lot of nice perch in that 8-12 inch range in 25-30 ft of water. Lower Thomson’s had good reports on the perch and pike in that 3-5lbs range and some good brookies also.  Island Lake has lots of perch 7 to 10 inch range,  Lower Stillwater and Upper Stillwater kokanee are dong well for perch. Echo Lake doing well on kokanee in that 9 to 11 inch range.  Bitterroot Lake is wide open again. Ashley Lake is frozen and getting a few reports on kokanee.  Crystal Lake has some decent ice with guys limiting out on kokanee.  The Perch Assault out of Smith Lake is next week; anyone interested in participating can sign up at Snappy’s.

Leonard from Roberts Bait and Tackle

Warm weather has brought lots of open water for the Willow Creek Derby next Saturday.  Be sure to bring your ice fishing gear as well as your rod and reel, because if the ice goes away then they will have a shore derby 8am to 2pm. Francis has 8 inches of safe ice, but there is open water out there so be careful.  Baileys has 12, Fresno 12, Tiber has 12 inches,  Bynum did re-freeze,  Piscan still has 10 inches. For Nylon and Willow Creek bring your boats. Holter has lots of open water but by Log Gulf has  5-6 inches of ice, and Newland Reservoir has 12 inches. Beaver Creek by Havre has 10 inches. If you have any questions or need rod & reel repair call Leonard 406-454-1877.
