Big Sky Resort ends Season with a Splash this Weekend!

Big Sky is the last of Montana’s ski resorts to close for the season, and they will be hosting a pond skimming contest and other closing day festivities this weekend. If you aren’t up for spring skiing, this is the perfect day to participate in the celebration as a spectator. Especially considering you have a much better chance at staying dry watching than any of the pond skimming contestants.

Pond skimming has become a closing day tradition for many ski resorts looking for a way to spice up spring conditions and draw a crowd. If you are new to the concept, it works like this:

Pond skimming typically happens at the end of ski season. Pond skimmers ski down a hill, then try to skim across a pond without falling in and getting wet.

It’s usually a competition and anyone can enter, sometimes in a costume or even in a bathing suit, and the goal is to get enough speed going down the hill so you can skim the pond and get to the other side without ending up in the pond. The faster you ski, the better chance you’ll have of making it to the other side of the pond.
