Crooked Creek: Where the Musselshell Meets the Missouri (Brett French Radio Show Preview)

A recent trip to the Crooked Creek recreation area was the realization of a long-held dream. OK, so most people may not think of Crooked Creek as dream worthy. After all, there’s a huge, shallow mudflat where the Musselshell River meets the Missouri in this remote part of the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge, about 50 miles north of Winnett. But that remoteness is one of the reasons I always wanted to go there. Plus, studying it on maps and Google Earth, it just looked like a cool spot. I wasn’t disappointed. We had the campground all to ourselves. The weather was fairly cooperative for the first day, luring us in further. But the fishing was so slow that we never got a strike despite throwing out an arsenal of hardware and then bait. The high Musselshell and Missouri rivers had clouded up the water, maybe to the point where fishing was no good. Or maybe it was just me. Even without a boatload of fish, though, I’d recommend a visit to this beautiful area. For more information, check out my story at The Billings Gazette’s website: http://bit.ly/1pTQHgD
