Backpackers have to winnow their gear down to about 50 pounds of stuff or less, including food, which means they can’t haul many camp comforts. The same isn’t true for car campers – those who don’t own a camp trailer or RV and are still tenting. Some car campers even use a small utility trailer to make sure they have everything they need. Everyone probably has the basic necessities – a tent, sleeping bag, air mattress or pad, cooler and a stove. Beyond that, what are some good items to have? Camp chairs are nice for sitting around the campfire at night. To have a good fire, you will probably have to bring some firewood from home or buy it from the campground host. Board games, cards and a lantern can make the evenings more enjoyable. A small gas or charcoal grill is perfect for cooking steaks, burgers or hot dogs, traditional camping food. Try to prepare as many dishes as possible ahead of time and by all means, don’t forget the ice.
