Fishing Limits Removed Temporarily at Camas Lake

The Montana Fish and Wildlife Commission approved removing the angling creel limits in Camas Lake effective immediately through Aug. 3.

Camas Lake is 19 miles west of White Sulphur Springs in the Big Belt Mountains of the Helena National Forest. The lake is the headwaters of Big Camas Creek.

The effort is part of a westslope cutthroat trout restoration project wherein non-native Yellowstone cutthroat trout will be removed with rotenone and replaced by locally obtained native westslope cutthroat trout. This regulation change allows anglers to remove as many fish as possible prior to the electro fishing removals.

This regulation allows unlimited harvest of fish in Camas Lake until Aug. 3.

Questions regarding this regulation should be directed to FWP fisheries biologist David Moser at 791-7775.

Fishing Limits Removed for One Month on Portion of Elkhorn Creek

The Montana Fish and Wildlife Commission approved removing the angling creel limits for one-half mile of Elkhorn Creek on the Beartooth Wildlife Management Area through Aug. 15.

This action permits unlimited harvest of hybrid westslope cutthroat trout and rainbow trout until Aug. 15 in the half mile stretch between the confluence of the east and west forks of Elkhorn Creek downstream to a concrete fish barrier.

The effort is part of a westslope cutthroat trout restoration project to remove hybrid fish.

Upstream reaches of Elkhorn Creek hold very slightly hybridized westslope cutthroat trout. This temporary regulation change allows anglers to remove as many fish as possible this summer prior to the electro fishing removals.

Questions regarding this regulation should be directed to FWP fisheries biologist David Moser at 791-7775.
