GORP Recipe – A Little More Than Good Old Raisins and Peanuts

GORP-and acronym for Good Old Raisins & Peanuts, or trail mix.

Trail mix is considered an ideal snack food for hikes, because it is lightweight, easy to store, and nutritious, providing a quick energy boost from the carbohydrates in the dried fruit or granola, and sustained energy from fats in nuts.

The basic idea is to mix the following: nuts, seeds, dried fruit, grains, sweets, and something savory. The combinations are endless, and it is fun to try out a different mix every time. The Greatist.com has some great combination suggestions, for those click here.

We picked a few recipes for you to try on your next outdoor adventure:

Hazelnut Mocha Trail Mix

Ingredients(Makes 3 cups):

  • 3/4 cup hazelnuts
  • 3/4 cup roasted almonds
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1/2 cup chocolate covered coffee beans
  • 1/2 cup white chocolate chips

Original recipe makes 4 poundsChange Servings

Directions:
Melt chocolate in a large saucepan over low heat or in microwave until just until soft. Stir until melted. Combine all the other ingredients in big roaster pan or bowl. Stir chocolate into mixture. Turn out on waxed paper. Of course anything you like can be added or substituted-but this recipe is a great combination!Combine the crispy rice cereal squares, toasted oat cereal, pretzels, cashews and candy in big roaster pan or bowl. Stir chocolate into mixture. Turn out on waxed paper and let cool.

Tropical Mix

Adjust the measurements of each of these to your liking:

  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1 cup raw almonds
  • 1 cup sunflower seeds
  • 1 cup dried pineapple
  • 1 cup of dried banana chips

Spicy and Savory

Mix equal parts of each of these ingredients, or adjust the amounts to your liking:

  • Almonds
  • wasabi peas
  • sesame seeds
  • dried ginger
  • Chex cereal

Monkey Munch

Mix equal parts of each of these ingredients, or adjust the amounts to your liking:

  • Banana chips
  • peanuts,
  • almonds
  • dark chocolate chips
  • raisins
  • coconut flakes

Classic GORP 

Original recipe makes 1 1/2 cups

Directions: Mix em together and pack for the road!
