Grandpa Winters and Julia Ketner with a pair of Kentucky Lake largemouth bass.

“It’s fun. It’s exciting to fight a big fish,” is the response that 10 year-old Julia Grace Ketner says about what drives her to keep fishing after already being the title holder of 24 International Game Fish Association (IGFA) world records, along with 28 records currently pending!

According to an article on thefishingwire.com, the New York native youngin’s grandpa, Captain Wes Winters, a now retired commercial maritime pilot, is her mentor and he couldn’t be more proud of his granddaughter, calling her “quite a catch”.  She was just four years-old when she saw a picture of a girl holding a plaque in Captain Wes Winters’ publication and said, “I can do that”….and she was right!

Julia is on an ongoing mission to set and best IGFA records and is obviously headed in the right direction.  This is a girl who knows what she is doing!  Her favorite types of fishing include mahi-mahi, white marlin and pickerel.  Although the sixth grader possesses a commitment and drive beyond her years, she still has time to enjoy being a normal kid and still “laughs at Sponge Bob Square Pants” and loves to play with her eight year-old sister, Abby, who also currently holds one IGFA record and has another pending.

Stories like this are why we all should take a kid fishing!  At just 10 years-old she has already accomplished all of this, and I look forward to reading about where she is in 10 more years.  Very cool.
