Wardens Investigate Elk Poaching Near Canyon Creek

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks wardens are investigating the recent poaching of a bull elk near Canyon Creek northwest of Helena. The animal was discovered about a quarter of a mile off Lincoln Road in an alfalfa field. Apparently, it had been shot and left to waste, with neither antlers nor meat salvaged.

“Unfortunately, similar activity has happened here in the past,” says Warden Justin Hawkaluk. “Late in the summer as the country dries up, the elk will come down out of the hills and cross the highway to get to the alfalfa fields or water and it can make them easy targets for a poacher.”

Hawkaluk is asking the public to help put an end to poaching in the area by reporting any tips on this case and others to (800) TIP-MONT. Callers may be eligible for a reward and may remain anonymous.
