The Montana Bowhunters Association held its annual state convention in Billings last weekend, giving me a chance to meet two young Wisconsin men who have moved to Bozeman to launch a traditional bow business. Chester and Ike Floyd bought RER Bows from its Wisconsin owner last year and relocated the business. They build recurve and long bows out of laminated woods. They also make bows to custom orders. It’s nice to see younger folks getting into the business, said the former owner, Kevin TerMaat. And he thinks that Montana provides a good market for the bows. Also at the MBA convention I got a chance to talk to the group’s president, Joelle Selk. She said the biggest challenge the group faces is the continued attempts to squeeze crossbows into the archery season – a move the group has continuously opposed.
