Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks game wardens are looking into a case of elk poaching just west of Butte this week.

Wardens responded to an anonymous tip which alerted them to an elk carcass in an area east of Browns Gulch Road and south of Oro Fino Gulch Rd. The person or persons responsible for shooting the elk attempted to hide the carcass, but ravens made its presence on the landscape obvious to the reporting party and responding wardens. Most of the meat had been removed along with the head.  Given that the head had been removed and the lighter color of the hide, it is believed to be a bull elk.

In addition to hunting out of season, the person or persons responsible may among other violations be charged with unlawful possession, game unlawfully taken, and criminal trespass.

Anyone with information about this case is urged to call (800) TIP-MONT. Callers may remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward.
