Zika Virus possibly in Northwest Montana
First detected in the 1940’s in Africa, the Zika virus is in the same realm as yellow fever and west nile virus and transported by mosquito. When infected, the person experiences symptoms of rash, joint pain, soreness and red eye or conjunctivitis. One person in Northwestern Montana believes they have been infected with the virus. Blood samples have been taken and sent to the lab for testing. There have been only a few hospitalizations from the virus and no fatalities.
There is no treatment or vaccine available, so the only protection against it is to avoid travel to areas that have it and/or to use high powered mosquito repellent to lessen the chance of a bite.
