Billings Gazette photographer Larry Mayer leads an exciting life. He only needs to drive to work to spot an incredible photo opportunity, a coyote chasing a pronghorn doe in an attempt to hamstring it for a morning meal. Mayer captured photos of the wild dance right next to the road to his house. Turns out the coyote-pronghorn connection is not unusual. Studies in Yellowstone have shown coyotes were to blame for the majority of pronghorn fawn deaths. And a search of YouTube brings up a few pronghorn-coyote encounters captured on video. Still, it’s hard to believe that a canine so small in comparison to its prey would attempt such an exhausting hunt. This one ended unsuccessfully for the coyote and in favor of the pronghorn.
