December 1st was Montana’s winter lion season opener.  Opening day for houndsmen is like opening day for elk hunters.

Lion season means cruising forest service roads in search of tracks all night and when a fresh track is found hounds are fitted with radio or gps tracking collars and released on the track  at first light.

Houndsmen watch the race anxiously via LCD screens and lusten for the sound of hounds barking “treed”.  It’s true mountain music.

Mountain lion hunting is a unique and exciting way to explore Montana’s wildest places, if you have never experiemced you’re missing out!
