The deadliest place in the United States for snowmobilers is just outside of Cooke City, Montana, that tiny town at the end of the road and northeast of Yellowstone National Park. In the past 15 years, 14 snowmobilers have died in avalanches in the Beartooth Mountains near this old mining town. More than half were from out of state, but there has been a fair share of in-state riders who’ve succumbed to the allure and danger of this region, as well.

To read more about why this place can be so dangerous, check out my story in this week’s Billings Gazette at: http://bgz.tt/i1e8z
