Montana State Parks (stateparks.mt.gov) announced today that Makoshika State Park has been voted the #1 Attraction in Montana by a USA TODAY® 10Best Readers’ Choice travel award contest.

The public has spoken and Makoshika State Park is the #1 Attraction in Montana. The park was 1 of 20 nominees in USA TODAY® 10Best Readers’ Choice travel award contest and beat out other locations such as the Beartooth Highway and Yellowstone National Park to take the top spot.

“Makoshika is a hidden gem and we are honored to be recognized by the public this way.” said Chris Dantic, Makoshika State Park Manager, “It just shows how awesome the Last Best Place is and how much the state of Montana and Dawson County love their crown jewel of the East.”

Visitors to Makoshika State Park find grand vistas and stunning rock formations that are a glimpse into the earth’s geological past. The park is also home to many fossils including dinosaurs such as Tyrannosaurs Rex and Triceratops. With over 11,500 acres, Makoshika is the largest state park and offers a visitor center, amphitheater, pavilion, and campgrounds as well as a wide variety of activities from hiking and biking to wildlife viewing and disc golf.

A panel of experts partnered with 10Best editors to pick the initial 20 nominees, and the top 10 winners were determined by popular vote. Experts Andy Austin, Lisa Ballard, Donnie Sexton and Carter G. Walker were chosen based on their knowledge and experience of travel in Montana.
