A land swap deal with potential to increase public access to national forest in the Upper Cinnabar Basin moved forward this week.

Officials signed off on the initial approval of the trade of about 590 acres of U.S. Forest Service land on the Shooting Star Ranch. Ranch owner William D. Morean will trade 583 acres in the deal, Montana Untamed reported.

Montana officials said the swap will improve fish and wildlife habitat while increasing public access. The land exchange is valued at about $1.23 million, Montana Untamed reported.

The official decision can be viewed here.
