Some nice fish have been coming out of Hebgen Lake lately.  Several different anglers have talked about catching 18-20” rainbows and browns, 50-100 feet off the shorelines, around Horse Butte and on the southwest side of the lake headed toward the Madison Arm.  Watch the depth—the water level is about 2.5 feet below full pool and the places where there are sandbars and shallow edges are showing up, although the lake is 92% full.   Fishermen are generally finding fish about 20-30 feet below the surface—on a variety of tackle.  The fish seem to be taking to darker colors now, with some eye-catching sparkling colors to catch their attention.

The handmade streamer bug in the picture above caught a 20” rainbow just 2 feet below the surface of the water while trolling.  Notice the eyes; those give some weight to the bug so it doesn’t bounce on surface but stays in the water just enough.
