Are walleye a Montana native? Should you care? A few weeks ago Montana walleye angler Dale Gilbert challenged the Montana Fish and Wildlife Commission to recognize walleye as a native species. He pointed to research that’s been done showing that walleye ranged across Eastern Montana’s rivers. With recognition as a native, Gilbert contends, walleye will be treated better as a species in the state. Fish, Wildlife & Parks’ officials contend not much would change if they were recognized as native, but the agency will conduct some research and report back to the commission in February.
